I have been volunteering with GDR for almost 3 years. As an adoption coordinator for a little more than a year. I could tell the familiar tale of picking up frightened, filthy flea invested danes at shelters and counter them with stories of forever home adoptions for healthy happy tail waggin dogs.

But recently I have learned something new...........

At a recent adotion I was asked what the actual cost was to rehabilitate the dane they were adopting.I knew that the adoption fee did not cover all costs but I also knew that Fluffy was lucky in that she was already pretty healthy when she came to us. I did not expect her vet bills to be significant.

BOY WAS I WRONG! This healthy dane managed to run up a bill of over $800 retail! Due to the generocity of our vets and the rescue disount that bill was $502! FIVE HUNDRED AND TWO DOLLARS!!!!!!! Adoption fees are $235 So we still spent $267 before anyone bought any food, a collar, leash ..........and this was a healthy dog!!!!!!! I would hate to see the vet bills for the ones that need surgery, HW treatment, or mange treatment!
