I finally got Poppers neuter appt. It will be the 18th. Here's the thing...the 19th we have a company day out thing at Six Flags. Do you think he'll be okay alone that day after or should I consider boarding him? I'm assuming he won't want to be very active, but I'm thinking about the stitches and him being bored in the crate..and blood. When I got Java (the Boston) back, he just slept the whole time, but Popper is in general more active that Java ever was.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom!

I think he's okay now
The neuter went off without a hitch! He has refused to wear the e-collar. He won't even let me put it on him. They tried at the clinic, but he growled and started his high pitched craziness when they got close with it. I've been monitoring him and he does lick at the stitches, but not too much. He's been fairly zonked out with his pain meds, though. I'm glad you all warned me about it not looking like the surgery was done....I looked and thought, geez...nobody is going to believe he's fixed!
Hey, glad to hear everything went well!
And who are kidding considering putting an e-collar on Popper! You're just setting him up to show off his Houdini skills! I'm really happy everything went well:)
here is a article form the great dane lady about surgery...

Good article...
Thanks! I talked to a friend of mine who has a Dane also..she agreed to keep him at her house for me that Saturday. :)
Probably reschedule
Every dog is different after undergoing surgery just like people. Some boune back and do great and some need a few more days to recover. If you are uneasy, and it sounds like you are, then I would just reschedule for day when you know you will be home more. When Duke was neutered he was so out of it the first couple of days that I don't think it would have been a big deal to leave him alone but I would have worried to death. heck I worried even when I was home because he seemed so drugged for so long.

I'd re-schedule...
...especially since the ASPCA won't keep him overnight. My terrier gets her teeth cleaned under anesthesia. She never had any issues but this year she was really out of it to the point we canceled a weekend trip so we could keep a close eye on her. Go figure...murphys law or something I quess! Let me know how it went afterwards...Barnum and Bailey will be snipped in a few months.
Neuteres
First off, if this is your first neuter, he will looks larger after surgery than before. It can take a week or two for all the swelling to reside. The first neutered male I had, I thought they had not done the surgery. He was HUGE. If you do not want to leave him at the vets office, then just make sure he is in an E collar and crated for his safety. Most vets offices want to keep them over night thought to make sure everything is ok. It is really up to you whether you want to take him home or not. I think he would be fine but leaving him at the vets is always a better piece mind!!!
Thanks for being a responsible pet owner!!

We're having it done
at the SPCA for cost reasons...$75 versus $300. They won't keep him overnight..so that was my dilemma. Maybe I should just re-schedule the surgery for a day when we don't have something to do the next day.
Just to be safe
And for your peace of mind...I would have the vet keep him. That way you can enjoy your day without worrying about your sweet baby!

Personally I would leave him at the vets office one more day.
With all the males we have had here, it seems the males will dig and lick
more than the females do on their day after surgery.
